A major low-pressure system was approaching from the west, closely following the stable post-frontal conditions of the previous day, left by a weaker cold front that passed by in the north. Davis reported predictions of somewhat better lift, no cumulus development, no chance of rain, and an uncertain extent of high cloud cover from the leading edge of the low-pressure system. Moderate south to southeast wind was expected all day, with westerlies possibly pushing in from the Gulf later in the afternoon. The task committee selected three alternatives, and just before launch opened, it met again and chose the longest option, based on more sun than expected along the course, and the appearance of scattered flattened cumulus. To help avoid hazardous crowding, we chose an entry start cylinder format, with a 10-mile radius around turnpoint ROK-98 for the rigids, a 15-mile radius for the flexwings, a single start time of 1:30 for the rigids, and flex starts of 1:30, 1:45, and 2:00 for the flexwings. This would be sure to put the rigids out on course well ahead of the flexwings. When soarable conditions were late getting started, the task committee moved all the start times back by a half-hour.
